SNMP Tools - monitoring software

SNMP Tools is FREE monitoring software for Windows. Software package contains tools for querying and monitoring unlimited number of SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) enabled devices:

  • SNMP Monitor module for monitoring SNMP devices:
    • Produces graphs (similar to good old MRTG)
    • Sends email alerts based on specified thresholds
    • Sends http url-based alerts based on specified thresholds
    • Also includes PING monitor
  • SNMP Monitor Admin Tool - simple web tool for administering SNMP Monitor. It simplifies greatly administrators tasks when defining new hosts, gauges and thresholds.
  • SNMP Query module for requesting and extracting data from SNMP devices. This can be used for making SNMP queries from command-line. It is also able to extract all the data from SNMP device, storing it file for later analyzing. Extracted file can be big help for defining monitoring for less-known devices.
  • RFC2MIB module for downloading RFCs and extracting MIBs

SNMP devices can be computer, router, printer, ups or any other SNMP device. MIBs are Management Information Base's that describe the data structures that can be requested from SNMP devices. SNMP Tools uses them for resolving Object IDs to textual names.

SNMP Tools contains pre-defined configurations for monitoring computers (Windows and Linux based, also Unix based), smart UPS devices (standard and APC).

Typical servers and workstations can give out information about:

  • network traffic - how much data goes in and out;
  • load percent of processors (how busy the computer is), SNMP Monitor can monitor up to 16 processors per computer;
  • storage used - how full are your disks and how much memory is in use;

Smart SNMP enabled UPS can give out information about:

  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Power
  • Frequency
  • Battery load
  • Battery temperature
  • and much more depending on device model

Typical router can give out information about:

  • network traffic - how much data goes in and out on each interface;
  • and much more depending on device model;

There are SNMP devices for example for monitoring room temperature and humidity.
